History

Moss' rich history begins with a 20th century visionary: Bill Moss, an artist and industrial design wizard who invented the technology of “tensioned fabric”. Bill designed and patented the first "pop-up" tent in 1955. In 1983, Moss brought its expertise in curvilinear designs in lightweight fabric and frame to the Outdoor Retailer Show as a backdrop for its products. That first tensioned fabric display caused a stir in the industry as exhibitors recognized the advantages with a solution that was comparatively lightning-fast to assemble and dismantle. A passion for innovation continued to move Moss ahead. Moss increased its manufacturing capability by acquiring Exhibit Architecture in 2002, located outside Chicago, and in 2006 opened a rental depot in Las Vegas. 1955 1983 2002 In 2007, Moss partnered with Nichols Inc., a company with its own history of pioneering fabric printing. The combination of Nichols' premier printing and Moss' exceptional engineering in crafting custom tensioned fabric structures allowed the company to significantly increase production capacity and product offerings to all markets served. In 2010 Moss again expanded its product offering with the purchase of Pink Inc. in New York. Pink, one of the premiere brands in the event décor industry, added a line of creative and unique event products to further diversify Moss’ offerings. In 2011 Pink relocated and opened a showroom and headquarters in Soho and rental warehouse in Secaucus, NJ. The newest member added to the Moss family is Flying Colors, located in Berkeley, CA. Flying Colors has been renown in the sports industry as a top provider of design, program management and installation for venue and event branding. Backed by Moss’ production capability, Flying Colors instantly became an enhanced complete solution for its broad customer base. 2007 2010 2013 In December, 2013, Moss took a major leap forward, reenergizing its family of brands and carrying them into the future with a unified Moss identity. Moss, Flying Colors and Pink evolved into Moss Exhibits, Moss Sports and Moss Events, directly connecting each with the qualities that the Moss name and all of its resources have stood for: innovation, partnership, reliability and exceptional quality. All of Moss continues to be inspired by our founder’s enthusiasm for creative problem-solving and innovative design. Moss added Andres Imaging & Graphics, broadening its solutions. Andres was a recognized digital print & fabrication leader in branded environments from retail to corporate and sports, named for founder Andre Schellenberg who’d founded “Foto Lab” in 1974. Andres introduced direct print from transparencies, dye transfer prints from scanner separations and the first electrostatic print transfers into materials never printed before. The knowledge diversification further sharpens Moss’ leading edge. 2014 2015 2018 Moss begins international production with the acquisition of Germany’s Marx+Moschner, a European tension fabric leader who like Moss had innovatively served retail and trade show customers for over 30 years. The strategic growth comes with increased demand from retail and exhibit markets seeking Moss’ high-quality solutions worldwide; Moss has already been delivering and installing solutions overseas for many years. Moss opens in Changzhou, China in a newly-built facility inland from Shanghai. At more than 7,700 sq m, it is Moss’s fourth tension fabric production center servicing the global trade show, retail, event and corporate environment markets. Providing the benefit of globally consistent production, Moss expands into a key strategic growth region where customers and marketers are inquiring about international services and the need for reliable partners in Asia.
