UI Labs is a Chicago-based research and scientific collaborative dedicated to knowledge-sharing, education and technical advancement. More than 30 academic members and dozens more corporate and government members are partners in the inaugural lab - the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII).
The lab-member signage above the reception area is composed of printed satin-brushed Chemetal and white Sintra mounted to ½” acrylic. The Future Today feature wall showcases magnetic-receptive base and UV printed poly 8 graphic fascia on painted drywall.
Elsewhere, glass applications feature white ink printed onto clear base vinyl, while the visually interesting and functional floor design is painted using plotter-cut stencils. Dimensional 1/8” Sintra wayfinding elements on the wall meet the painted wayfinding on the floor.
The 94,000 sq. ft. UI Labs facility will be home to several labs, including the City Digital lab that is currently being established. The facility's dynamic environmental branding and wayfinding are precisely executed, matching the labs' collaborative scientific mission and providing an immersive, stimulating experience.
UI Labs - Skidmore Owings & Merrill, architect & Clune Construction, GC - was recognized as a 2015 Distinguished Building award winnder by the AIA, which found that "Flexibility and visual connectivity underpin the design... An environmental graphics suite brings further cohesion, information, and inspiration to the interior. Prominent elements include a large-scale magnetic storyboard wall; two sculptural pieces that display the names of UI Labs’ partner institutions; and wayfinding white stripes, painted on the concrete floor, that lead to different spaces within the facility."
